Ed Boks: A Champ in His Own Mind

.
I will only briefly change the subject from the Mason case as there is so much more to report, but on googling "Boks" one can find:

From the minutes of the June 3, 2006 Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils Senate meeting:

Edward Boks, General Manager of Los Angeles Animal Services, was the Guest Speaker.

He announced that pet adoption is up (130%) and pet euthanasia is down (35%) this year. He reported that New York became very "no-kill" when he was there.

In fact, dog/cat adoptions were up only 6.6% and euthanasia was down only 6.5%

Ed inflated the adoptions increase by 2,000%, and inflated the decline in euthanasia by 500%!

  2. Boks made New York nokill? Tell that to all the animals that were KILLED. He has a lot of effing nerve to tell people these huge lies. Doesn't he realize that we are now on to him.We will try to verify everything he says. He can't get away with the lying here in LA any more.

  3. He's obviously counting animals placed with rescue partners. Just like he did in claiming LAAS to be the number one public adoption agency in the nation. These animals were placed with rescue to be adopted at a later date but there's no guarantee these animals were adopted. Rescue takes a lot of sick and injured animals from shelters and not all of them make it.

  4. Boks made Arizona no kill. He made New York no kill. He has already made LA no kill. You know how you make a city no kill? You just tell everyone you did.

That guy is pathological, really. He has a mental illness.

Someone in New York told me that the main reason he got fired from New York was because of the overcrowding causing mass illness. Same thing happened here yet our Mayor keeps him. Go figure. They said the second reason was the lawsuit filed against him. Mind you, he'd been fighting with his superiors the entire two years he was in New York. They reprimanded him all the time. In his own affidavit he said he feared being fired all the time. He knew they probably wouldn't renew his contract so he was looking around for a job and contacted LA through Michelson. Notice, his best friend Gary Kaskel was shocked and upset when they didn't renew his contract. If Boks didn't want his contract renewed, he would have told his best friend, but he didn't.

He was glad to go because he'd already been looking for a job and found one that paid better here in LA. He could start all over again with the lies. His NY lies had already caught up to him. He didn't improve things, he just juggled the numbers, refused animals, let animals die and sent out phoney press releases claiming "success."

  5. Re Brad's comment above.

Not at all. You are trying to find some reality where his numbers make sense. Rescue partner placements actually decreased so that net placed out was up only 1.5%.

You have to go one step further; there is no conceievable reality situation where his numbers make sense.

He flat out lied thinking that what he said would not be in writing, or if it were, if anyone read it, they would not question his numbers---like the mayor.

  6. Boks told a San Pedro shelter employee that euthanasia was down 100% for all animals in their shelter. That is of course not true. The employee seemed to believe it.

What's funny is that Boks boo hoos the numbers out of san francisco because they didn't include feral cats and neonate kittens. Well, now Boks doesn't include feral cats or kittens either because he refuses them. In fact, Boks refused feral cats and neonate kittens in Arizona and New York. That would be like the LAPD not booking in criminals convicted of rape and robbery. Crime would definitely appear to go down when it's not down.

One last thing I've seen in the last few days, they are taking in mom and kittens. I see two moms with at least five eyes closed kittens each. Mom is booked in but not the neonates. They have a mother so there's no need to kill them. He's just not counting them. It's all a numbers game to Boks.

  7. My bad. Even when including Rescue the increase would be no where near 130%. Perhaps it was a typo? When you compare the 12 months ending Sep06 to Sep07 the best "figure" one could possibly come up with would be a 14% increase and thats only if you calculate the % of increase for rescue and adoption separately... then add the two (I don't believe this is the correct way to do it though). LAAS Stats

  8. Brad,

Assuming the 130% increase in adodoptions was a typo, isn't the 35% decrease in euthanasia also a typo? How many typos do you need to have before you determine a lie is just a lie, not some factor you missed or a typo?

Please at least consider Boks' claim just an outright lie, then everything that has ever happened, anywhere in time and space suddenly makes sense.

He is just a liar and you are trying to figure a rational explanation why those numbers came out of his mouth.

His numbers have become so bizarre no one tries to figure them out anymore. You are still trying?

  9. Yeah sorry, I'm cursed with trying to make sense of anyone's numbers. I can understand how someone could've made a mistake and added a zero to 13% making it 130% but not with the 35% reduction in euthanasia. According to stats published by LAAS the reduction in euthanasia was 23% in the last 12 months ending September not 35%. No mistake in typing here.

  10. Boks was talking about the first months of 2006, until June 2006. He did well in early 2006, then crashed. He was doing about 9-11% decrease in euth at that time for the first 6 months.

We are not talking about the past 12 months, October 2006 to October 2007, current stats.

In any event, 10% is not 35%. At the end of 2006, for the entire year, it was a decrease of 6.5%. So, divide 35% by 6.5% and you get an inflation factor of 500%.

He might have been talking about a 35% decrease since the first year of stats in 2000. In any event, it does not matter because you don't know what he is talking about. Maybe the growth of his nose.

  11. Don't waste your breath trying to figure out his numbers. They make no sense because they are just lies. When he was in Arizona he went to Best Friends "no more homeless pets" events and spoke. He said he had not killed an adoptable animal in 3 years. Okay now. If the animal was "adoptable" that means it was adopted. He was killing 51-78% of all animals at this time. So 51-78% weren't adoptable? The real numbers mean nothing to Boks. And what about all the animals that died in their cage? or all the kittens and feral cats that he refused to take in?

If you look at it, the only way Boks improved the numbers at past shelters was merely by refusing animals. He refused kittens and ferals, then owner relinquished animals. You take those animals out of the equation and an infant could make LA "nokill" instantly. He never really improved any shelter which was fine by Boks.He only cares about the publics perception of him. He doesn't care about animals at all.
