Animal Services never releases shelter by shelter stats.

I wish they would as it would point to which shelters are apparently making progress, especially if it gives intake condition, such as healthy, sick, neonatal, etc., along with outcomes.

As it is, AS hides all info regarding specific employees, such as who did the intake, who ordered or performed euth. Protecting the employee from criticism or public recognitioin hides substandard performance.

This is kitten season.

Once again this year there is absolutely no program for bottle feeding or care of neonatals. There is no program other than the foster which only saved a couple of hundred lives--tops.

I also understand the opening the new Harbor facility is placed on indefinite hold due to budget trimming. Boks had to take a two week payless vacation. The latter may or may not be true.

  1. We dont' even have fosters here. The Assistant Shelter Director, Dorinda Pulliam (we do not have a Shelter Director) will not allow it. She is on record as having stated that the public is too irresponsible to foster animals. (See Nathan's blog for his commentary on Austin)

Our group has a small program to try to keep neonates out of the shelter (we aren't allowed to pull from the shelter) but it is like bailing out the ocean with a teaspoon.

  2. " it is like bailing out the ocean with a teaspoon."

Sure feels that way every friggen day of the year for cat people who are out there doing the grass-roots, hands-on work in the trenches.

So many are loaded with animals inside and outside of their home and feeding so many cats out of their home that they get way over their head and their cat colonies fall apart and end up with more reproduction than they started with.

Trying to keep them from reproducing and keeping them out of the shelters and out of your own limited space is exactly how Kelly describes it, "bailing out the ocean w/ a friggen teaspoon," and we're not alone.

  3. The Mayor asked all employees to take a two week vacation without pay because of the budget crisis. Only a handful of people did this. I'm sure Boks would love to take two weeks off. Hell, bet he wants to quit. First quarter 2008 was a disaster. Intake is back up to 2002 levels. Euthanasia is sky high. Boks' bag of tricks has caught up with him
