The November statistics are out.
Below are the killing versus impound rates for: cats and dogs; rabbits; all other animals.
2007/2008
cats/dogs 36%
bunnies 31%
others 41%
2006/2007
cats/dogs 33%
bunnies 34%
others 30%
2005/2006
cats/dogs 41%
bunnies 33%
others 32%
During the three years he has been here, he has decreased cat and dog killing by only 5%, which is 1.6% per year. Given this rate of improvement, we will be in the Winograd No-Kill range in about 27 years assuming impounds remain the same.
If the spay/neuter law SUBSTANTIALLY decreases impounds, we may be no kill in 19 years assuming the budget returns to the 2007-2008 level.
I think the No-Kill goal can be had far more quickly given new management.
Boks promised to make LA "NoKill" by 2008. It's almost 2009 and euthanasia has increase. Boks is the "MoreKill" guru.
ReplyDeleteEuthanasia has only gone down 4% since Boks arrived three years ago. That's 1.3% decrease a year. His first year there was no decrease at all. It actually increased slightly. His second year he fudged the books and animals, turning away animals most likely to be euthanized. His third (and hopefully last year) the euth rate has gone up 3%. This is the first time a Director has actually made things worse. If we were to figure out euth, died, doa, the number of animals leaving dead has increased.
ReplyDelete2007/08 36% 23,327/63,505 Boks not fudging animals and the sucky economy
2006/07 33% 17,988/53,984 Boks fudging animals
2005/06 40% 22,410/55,640 Boks
2004/05 40% 23,003/56,963 pre-Boks
And let's keep in mind these are just the stats he lets out. Didn't he wrest the means of reporting out of the hands of people who were supposed to be making sure he didn't slant things in his favor? Ed, didn't you say a long time ago that one of the first things Boks tried to do was get control of the system so he could control his own stats?
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case (and it certainly seems like a very Ed Boks thing to do) then these are his prettied-up stats. This is the best-looking set of numbers he could create.
Which means things may be a lot worse even than what we see here.
The consensus among those of us following the department statistics is that he is no longer cheating on the numbers, that is why his numbers have gone so far South since October.
ReplyDeleteNow he rarely tries to spin the numbers either.
When half of the employees sign a letter to get rid of him, he has to watch out not to get caught in anything too egregious.

You're probably right Ed. At this point Ed Boks could probably strangle a cat with his bare hands and then hop in his car and run over a family of puppies and no one would do anything about it. Certainly corrupt Antonio Villaraigosa, who doesn't QUITE get why anyone cares about "just" animals wouldn't care. And the media who gave him not just a free pass, but who flat-out aided and abetted him in his criminal libel and persecution of Ron Mason -- they wouldn't care.
ReplyDeleteIt's gotten to a bad pass when he doesn't even feel like he has to hide his hopeless incompetence anymore. His kill numbers go up, half the department goes on record saying they have no confidence in his "leadership" and he gets what? A twenty thousand dollar raise.
We might as well be a banana republic or freaking Louisiana with all the blatant corruption in L.A. government. I'm glad Obama doesn't want any piece of Antonio Villaraigosa, God forbid he be allowed to infest anyplace else with his iniquity...but it sure would have been nice to get rid of him.
Boks has been interviewing for new jobs. HOORAY..He should be gone by the end of Feb.
ReplyDeleteGOOD RIDDANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow how do we get Villaraigosa to appoint someone who will ACTUALLY help the animals?
I heard today that they're talking about increasing spay/neuter fees. He certainly seems to be following Schwarzennegger's shameful playbook of swinging the axe at animals.
PS - Ed, do you know what's happened to Ryan Olshan? His excellent watchdog blog on the County system hasn't published a new post in almost two months.
Who would hire the guy? Honestly. Maybe he should go back to preaching.
